Our trip out west

So out of the blue, we get a phone call from Paul's brother announcing that his #2 son, who is 47 years old, is getting married to a beautiful, talented, successful girl on September 30 in the Salt Lake Temple.

Of course, I couldn't refuse an opportunity like this to be a part of the celebration so we immediately started planning our trip to Utah! I emailed my principal and assistant principal and even reminded them a day before we left. They just told us to have a great time. And, here we are.

We flew from Wichita to Salt Lake City on Tuesday, stayed 7 hours in the ICT airport waiting for our flight (long story) and spent several hours in the DEN airport chasing down gate changes for our flight to SLC. We finally arrived about 5 p.m. to beautiful, sunny, warm weather. It was nice.

Wednesday we drove to Rexburg, ID and visited several aunts and an uncle. They are amazing. Strong Latter-day Saints who have filled several missions, raised large families, devoted years to family history research and are still actively involved in a lot of activities -- gardening, photography, journaling, church callings and temple work!

On top of it all, one aunt has been stake Relief Society president several times in various student stakes and is a Democrat! At last!

We returned to Utah on Thursday and drove straight to the Zermatt Resort in Heber City, Utah. The weather was perfect and the fall colors were just beginning to show. WOW!

We checked into our beautiful room, got settled in and then attended a wedding dinner for immediate family members only. It was great! The bride's colors were black, white and red and everyone in the wedding party looked elegant and regal.

Friday was the big day. We drove the beautiful drive to temple square and parked the car north of the conference center. As would have it, we were early so we just checked into the recommend desk and walked to the waiting room for temple sealings. We were an hour early so spent some time people watching.

We were about 50 in number and we were called to a sealing room in the temple at the appointed time. As all rooms in the temple are exquisite and magnificent, so was this one. It was a joy to see these two wonderful people sealed to each other for time and all eternity.

After the temple experience we drove east on North Temple to the nearest fast food place/convenience store to get something to eat and drink. Then we drove on to former places of residence and church attending to see what changes had been made. The 20th Ward in the Ensign Stake was being remodeled and enlarged. Quite nice. I didn't take any pictures, sorry.

Then we finally found the Emigration Canyon road and got back to the resort to rest up and get ready for the evening dinner and final wedding activity. It was nice. Paul's Aunt LaRue Sims and Javan Sims came over from Provo and we spent some time visiting with them. Also Phil and Marilyn from Sandy. I'm glad we got to share a table with them.

Saturday morning began with a lot of the family meeting at a bakery at the Zermatt but as usual I didn't go. I'm beginning to dislike large crowds and people who talk a lot -- probably not good since I haven't met anyone in Paul's family who doesn't like to talk or who is quiet! I watched General Conference (not in my casuals) and enjoyed the TV commercials and other local news.

Since it was a Saturday and September 30, we had been invited to attend a birthday dinner celebration for a very old friend of ours who was celebrating his 97th birthday. This was in West Valley City and we really wanted to go but since we were in Heber Valley and it would mean more travelling time and gas, we drove South to Strawberry Reservoir and drove partially around the lake.

It was a beautiful drive.

We listened to the rest of conference on the radio. Thanks so much KSL. We got back in time to do some curious shopping at Smith's and to enjoy a few fruits of the harvest (peaches) and other fresh good eats. Paul found a meeting house to attend the priesthood session of conference and really enjoyed being with other similar-minded people.

It was a great trip. We received divine help in everything we did. We got to the SL airport in perfect sync to meet up with Grover and to return his car to him. We went through a very thorough search with TSA and got to our scheduled gate well ahead of time. By noon we were in Wichita, KS and home by 4 p.m.

Thanks family. It was a blessing from heaven to be with you.
